BLOEME
EVERS-EMDEN
Bloeme Evers-Emden.
Bloeme Evers is a small, valiant, and special woman. She occupies a prominent position in the Jewish women’s organization, Deborah and is active in the Jewish-Religious life of Amsterdam. She is inseparable from her husband, Hans, who is also active in Amsterdam Jewish life. Each meeting with Bloeme is a special experience.
In one of the first conversations I had with Bloeme, she said she could remember only a few of the details from the period when she was in the concentration camps. However, she was able to uniquely articulate her feelings and to analyze the depth of the mortifications that she endured as an eighteen-year-old girl. When she took her final high school examination in 1943, she was the only student left in the class; her classmates had all been arrested or had gone into hiding. She thought it unlikely that her diploma would ever be of any use to her.
Many years after the war, Bloeme completed her studies in psychology at the university, despite the responsibilities of a large family. Recently, she completed her thesis and is now a doctor of psychology.
Bloeme got to know Anne and Margot Frank in the Jewish Lyceum. In 1941, this preparatory school was designated for Jewish children. In Auschwitz-Birkenau Bloeme formed a strong friendship with Lenie de Jong-van Naarden and a number of other women that helped them survive an unbearable time. Of this group, five died. Their remembrance is a blessing to those who survived.
The names of the eight women who were together in the concentration camps for nine months and who shared love and sorrow were: Nettie, Lydia, Lenie, Annie, Rosy, Rootje, Anita, and Bloeme. They had a very special relationship that continues still.
